Picture taken on Saturday 17th June 2006, donated by Jonathan P. Neill

Post Office War Memorial

·       Location: Met Quarter, Whitechapel

·       Consultant: Professor C.H. Reilly who described it as ‘Probably the last public monument in this part of the world is the best, and not as well known as it should be…’

·       Statue: abstract seated female figure in Greek costume, representing 'Britain mourning her dead', originally the figure would have sat on a pedestal of Westmorland greenstone with inlaid inscription panels of green slate

·       Material: Echaillon Limestone

·       Originally unveiled: T.P. O'Coonor (M.P.) at the main hall of the General Post Office in Victoria Street on 15th June 1924, unveiled at it present location March 2006

·       Interesting features: antique Greek crested helmet, shield decorated with a figure of ‘Winged Victory’ holding a trumpet and a palm of victory, relief shows a crouched roaring lion (could be representing Britain's strength to defend herself), relief shows two sphinxes facing each other, and a downward hanging poppy held in the left hand
